This is one of my season cycle songs. It's either about Summer or Winter, depending on your point of view, though I think it's more the Winter. It's about my brother, Carl, but I won't say much about it. The lyrics say enough.
The music features my mate Paul on awesome rhythm guitar. It had a long gestation with many changes made over time. At some point I started hearing a song called The Bright Lights by Tanya Donelly in the verses, and that very much informed the final version. I added the booming drums and that extra guitar riff into the verses, and it seemed to help. The two quotes in the song are from the Star Trek film, Generations. The intro part is done by me, the part in the solo (the Jean Luc monologue) features the stentorian tones of my friend Rui.
lyrics
Staring at the ocean on a summer’s day.
Universe in motion, but you look away.
Thinking about a time and place when your world was new.
So many dreams just shattered there and what happened to you?
The memories linger on, but have the good times all gone?
You say that time is a fire you burn in.
How could these days go so wrong?
You’re spending your life staring into the fire,
You’re wearing out the best of your desire.
You really should be learning that it’s your life that’s burning.
You’re wasting your life staring into the fire.
Look into the glowing fire on a winter’s day.
Heavy thoughts about your so-called friends who just went away.
And a broken heart, the only legacy, from every girl you knew.
It should’ve made you stronger, but you haven’t got a clue.
The memories linger on, but have the good times all gone?
You say that time is a fire you burn in.
How could these days go so wrong?
You’re spending your life staring into the fire,
You’re wearing out the best of your desire.
You’re so afraid of hurtin’, you gotta let the world in.
You’re wasting your life staring into the fire, into the fire.
You’re spending your life staring into the fire,
You’re wearing out the best of your desire.
You’re wasting your life staring into the fire.
You’re wearing out the best of your desire.
You’re spending your life staring into the fire, into the fire.
